Leadership Vacuum Affects Both Parties and Our Nation

July 1, 2010

Interesting editorial by Pa 8th primary Republican candidate Gloria Carlineo in the Bucks County Courier Times:

Ater the May 18 Republican primary election, where I placed second in the four-way race for Pennsylvania’s 8th Congressional District, I started reading “The Real George Washington” (J. Parry/A. Allison). I chose this book not just because of my deep admiration for our first president, but because, frankly, I needed some inspiration.

Throughout my campaign, I spoke frequently of our Founding Fathers and the amazing feats that they accomplished risking life, limb and fortune for the principles they so deeply believed in. Their contributions are more admirable when we realize that they were fighting for a nation they didn’t know could exist and against the empire that ruled the world. Most Americans are unaware of the real hardships and tribulations that Gen. Washington had to endure to succeed.

In contrast, I just ran in a primary race that saw one of the lowest voter turnouts in recent memory. Perhaps it was the hardship of a rainy day. Or maybe people were just too busy to spend 10 minutes voting. It is also possible that people just didn’t read any of the extensive coverage of the primary in the newspapers or were oblivious to the omnipresent political signs that crowded our streets.

Then again, maybe people are just fed-up with the R’s and the D’s, convinced that neither can do any good. Perhaps they feel helpless and confused – many just giving up. Ironically, this apathy comes as our country faces seemingly insurmountable challenges and three-fourths of Americans are dissatisfied with the direction of our country, as evidenced by a recent Gallup poll.

The Philadelphia Inquirer Endorses…. Wait for It….

May 11, 2010

Mike Fitzpatrick!

Why are we not surprised? After all, the Inquirer is a left-leaning paper. In their eyes, Fitzpatrick, with his moderate voting record, ability to “work across party lines” and “commendable record of public service,”   is the best they can hope for in a Republican candidate.

But wait a minute, aren’t politicians with a moderate voting record and an ability to “work across party lines” (code for agreeing with the Democrats) part of what got us into this mess in the first place? Besides, isn’t the endorsement of a left-leaning newspaper exactly what Fitzpatrick doesn’t need right now?  After all, the conservative base is the energized portion of the electorate, and the Inquirer endorsement can’t be a point in favor of Fitzpatrick for most of us.

Our advice to you: Make an effort to meet candidates, question them, read about them. Find out what they stand for; their approach to the problems of the day. A good place to start is this blog. We’ve linked to their websites as well as articles on candidates in many races, and have opined on them as well. You can check out some of the candidates by clicking on links on the blog roll, and you can find more information by putting their name in the TJC blog search engine. But don’t stop there, learn as much as you can about the candidates before the election. Be sure to visit their websites.

Our advice to the Inquirer: Let voters make their own decisions. We don’t need endorsements from the Republican party, and we don’t need endorsement advice from a bankrupt liberal newspaper.

Here’s the excerpt that pertains to the Eighth Congressional District:

In the Eighth District, which includes Bucks County and slivers of Montgomery County and Northeast Philadelphia, former Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick is seeking the Republican nomination for the House seat he lost in 2006 to Democratic Rep. Patrick Murphy, who has no primary opposition.

Fitzpatrick, a lawyer and former Bucks County commissioner, offers the GOP the strongest chance to win back this seat. He’s a moderate Republican who can work across party lines. The Inquirer endorses MIKE FITZPATRICK.

His opponents are Gloria Carlineo, a GOP committeewoman in Solebury Township; James Jones, a Navy veteran and business consultant; and Ira Hoffman, a financial planner from Solebury. All three have brought valuable insights to the campaign, but none can match Fitzpatrick’s commendable record of public service.

GOP Candidates Push Their Plans

April 29, 2010

From The Doylestown Intelligencer

Those running for the 8th District congressional seat spoke on hot topics facing voters.

Four Republican candidates for the 8th Congressional District seat broadly agreed that the Obama administration and the Democratic-controlled Congress are leading America down a path to greater national debt and more challenges for business.

Speaking at a forum Thursday at Ann’s Choice retirement community Thursday, candidates Gloria Carlineo, Mike Fitzpatrick, Ira Hoffman and James Jones fielded questions from residents on hot topics from the health care and the economy to the national security threat posed by Iran.

Asked whether they would support a push to repeal the controversial national health care reform bill signed by President Barack Obama last month, all the candidates said they would. The candidates were also asked what they would do to address problems with the health care industry if the current law was struck down.

Carlineo Backs Term Limits, Tort Reform

March 3, 2010

An interview with Gloria Carlineo,  vying to be Republican candidate for the 8th District Congressional Seat currently occupied by Patrick Murphy, appeared in today’s Intelligencer.

Gloria Carlineo, a candidate for the Republican nomination in the 8th Congressional District, called an endorsement “irrelevant” Monday and said it’s unlikely the party will endorse a candidate in her race.

A Republican Party committeewoman in Solebury Township, she described former Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick as the “de facto endorsed candidate basically.”

At a time when conservative grassroots organizations are looking for new political leaders, Carlineo said the Bucks County Republican Party may not be in tune with its base. “They’ve been doing things the same way for decades,” she said.

In a Monday interview with The Intelligencer Editorial Board, Carlineo, 40, said:

n People of her generation don’t expect Social Security to be there for them, and she supports private savings accounts.

n She is against a government-run insurance plan to compete with private companies. She supports grants to clinics and municipal hospitals to help the uninsured. Tort reform, is critical, she said, to “limit the ridiculous amount of money” that goes to attorney fees.

n The growth of government is unsustainable. “We’ve got to stop reinforcing the cycle where when the private sector loses a job, the public sector absorbs it.”

n “It’s a moral responsibility to stay (in Iraq and Afghanistan) until things get stabilized.”

n She supports term limits: 10 years for House members, 12 for senators. “If the Founding Fathers saw what was happening today, they would be for them.”

Carlineo said she knows her willingness to back private accounts for Social Security is a dangerous place to be politically, as it badly damaged the Bush administration.

“Until a better system comes along, we need to look at different options,” she said.

The GOP Open Primary Bru-Ha-Ha Continues…

February 12, 2010

More about the calls for an Open Primary in the 8th District Congressional Election. (Several of these stories appear separately on the blog, but in an effort to group everything on this subject in one spot, we’ve reposted here.)

The Bucks Local News posted the story:  Bucks Congressional Candidates Call for “Fair and Open” Republican Primary

In an open letter to the Bucks County Republican Party, five candidates vying for the GOP nomination for Congress in the 8th District are calling for “fair and open primaries” in Bucks County.

“We were delighted when fellow candidate, Mike Fitzpatrick joined in our call for a fair and unbiased primary process. We firmly believe that this process will make the party stronger and, whoever the winning candidate is, a better prepared candidate as well,” reads the letter, signed by candidates Gloria Carlineo, Ira Hoffman, James Jones, Tom Lingenfelter and Jeffrey R. McGeary.

In the letter, addressed to Harry Fawkes, chairman; Patricia Poprik, vice-chairwoman; and the Bucks County Republican Committee, they write, “We believe that this process in no way diminishes the role of either the party or the committee people. In fact, we believe it strengthens their role, as they will be pivotal in making sure that the voters in their districts are well-informed and in getting out the vote. To that end, we still welcome the screenings by the committee people, as it will afford the opportunity for them to learn more about the candidates.

“We hope that the executive committee agrees with this request by all the candidates as we stand firmly united in this call,” they wrote.

Updated to Add (2/3/2010) Here’s the letter:  Letter:  8th District GOP Candidates Call for Open Primary

The Doylestown Intelligencer/Bucks County Courier Times also called for an open primary:  Let Voters Choose

Even Mike Fitzpatrick has called for an open primary  Fitzpatrick Calls for Open Primary.

Then there’s this from Bucks Right:

Former PA-8 Congressman and current candidate for the seat Mike Fitzpatrick has asked the Bucks County GOP not to endorse his candidacy prior to the May primary in order to give the party rank and file a chance to choose their candidate.

The request falls kind of flat considering how the party all but coordinated Fitzpatrick’s announcement that he was running last weekend, but on the whole it’s a classy and savvy move for Fitzpatrick.

Showing his willingness to reach out to grassroots groups, Mike Fitzpatrick is calling on the Bucks County Republican Party to forgo an endorsement in the 8th Congressional District GOP primary.

“I am calling for an open primary,” Fitzpatrick said Monday. “I am running to be the people’s candidate and I believe an open process will improve participation and lead to a higher level of debate.”

The tone deaf Bucks GOP machine leaders, though, are bridling at Fitzpatrick’s request that the people have a chance to vote before they endorse a candidate.

Pat Poprik, vice chairwoman of the Bucks County Republican Committee, said she doesn’t understand the hullabaloo being made about an endorsement.

“This negative connotation is baffling to me,” she said. “I’m perplexed. I don’t get how endorsing one candidate forbids another from running.”

I simply refuse to believe that Poprik doesn’t understand how the party’s endorsement would blow up the other candidates.   I do believe that party leaders are having trouble adjusting to the new political landscape, though. Their incredulity about the conservative uprising is something they need to get over pretty quickly if they want to tap into the excitement being generated around opposition to the country’s sudden leftward lurch.

Poprik said groups like teachers and doctors choose candidates for their special interests. “We have as much of a right as any other group,” she said.

There are real concerns about Fitzpatrick, including his electability and his notably liberal voting record.  In his original race for the seat in 2004, Fitzpatrick was up against a place-holder candidate that the Democrats put forward when they thought they were running against entrenched incumbent Jim Greenwood.  He won that race.  But as soon as Democrats gave backing to a real candidate – political newbie Patlosi Murphy during the very next cycle – Fitzpatrick lost.

Update 2/12/10  Here’s a letter  from candidate Gloria Carlineo that appeared in the Bucks Local News. Bucks County Republicans Showing ‘Lack of Professionalism”

Harry [Fawkes] and Pat [Poprik],

I am in receipt of the e-mail letter that you sent to “Republican Leaders,” which I can only assume refers to Republican committee people within Bucks County. I am in receipt of this e-mail, not because I was included in the distribution, as I should have rightfully been as committee woman for Upper Solebury Township, but because it was forwarded to me by other committee people. In fact, the last widely-circulated e-mail that I received as committee woman was the one sent on Jan. 21 on behalf of fellow candidate Mike Fitzpatrick, encouraging all of us to attend his announcement.

Furthermore, your attempt at smearing and/or mocking Mr. Bernardo Paratore for his part in volunteering to send a letter on behalf of the five Republican candidates that signed the letter calling for an open primary (as Mr. Fitzpatrick has likewise done) is highly uncalled for. Not only are you attacking a messenger, a private citizen who does not hold public office and who respectfully submitted correspondence on behalf of others, but it shows a lack of respect and professionalism on the part of the Bucks GOP. As a side note, why would Mr. Paratore or anyone else for that matter, bother to vote in primaries when the leadership of this party works so hard to squash them?

The rest of the letter can be seen at the link above.

Update: Adding link to video of Kitchen Table Patriots Candidates Forum. Also, see further information on individuals by clicking on their name under categories.

With every vote Congressman Patrick Murphy (D, 8th, PA) made to spend billions of tax dollars (for “stimulus,” “health care reform,” and “cap and trade,”) many of his constituents said they would work to oust him in the next election.

The next election is now less than a year away and several people have announced their intention to run against Murphy.

The following people are the contenders we’re aware of as of now:
