Patrick Murphy’s Continued Stealth Town Hall Meetings

December 7, 2009

Congressman Patrick Murphy continues to hold stealth town hall meetings, labeling them “Congressman on Your Corner” meetings in an effort to distance himself from controversy. Announced by phone only 24 hours in advance, Murphy held a town hall meeting at the Acme in Morrisville on Saturday, December 5, 2009. If you missed his call and didn’t know about the meeting, it was according to Murphy’s plan.

Murphy’s tactic conforms well to Obama’s way of fulfilling his “Transparency and Open Government” campaign promise. Holding a workshop on government openness that is closed to the public (
http://tinyurl.com/ydspffy
) epitomizes the fallacy behind Obama’s promise and sets an example to his followers on how to govern. Murphy has proven himself to be a devout follower.

Even so, enough people showed up at the Acme to offer criticism of Murphy’s follow-the-leader manner of representing constituents. It seems that if Reid, Pelosi or Obama says it, Murphy agrees. If you or a majority of constituents disagree, his stealth town halls give him a backup story of being open with his district before deciding to ignore all and vote the party line.

Perhaps Murphy will change his phone-in contact with constituents if too many disgruntled people continue to get wind of his stealth meetings. Smoke signals would dovetail nicely with his current method of rationalizing his positions and probably reach even less people.

Congressman Patrick Murphy Schedules a Pop Meeting–for Tomorrow–UPDATED Dec 7th

December 4, 2009

Congressman Patrick Murphy, (D, 8th) has scheduled a “Congressman on Your Corner” for tomorrow, Saturday, December 5th.

Broadly scorned for his unwillingness to appear at town hall meetings open to all constituents, Murphy seems to have announced this event only via phone calls, and just 24 hours before the event.  That’s one way to limit the number of people to attend.

This event will be held at the Morrisville Acme on December 5th between 4:00 and 5:30.

Murphy’s Got Game?

October 23, 2009

Congressman Patrick Murphy (D-PA) says “…any bill I vote for must be deficit neutral…” (
http://tinyurl.com/yjycbue
) when talking about the health care bill. However, we will not know until after the bill is passed whether it ends up being deficit neutral and there is very little evidence for it coming from Murphy. Joe Biden told us the administration misread the economy (
http://tinyurl.com/lvjw8f
). Why should we now believe Patrick Murphy and the rest of the administration aren’t misreading the health care bill, too?

Murphy seems to be certainly misreading his constituents as he works hard to become a national “player” for the Democratic Party. His basketball game with President Obama is just one place he has been practicing his new moves (
http://tinyurl.com/yljybdm
). Perhaps that and snuggling up to Hollywood celebrities is the reason he cancelled a scheduled phone-in town hall meeting on the health care bill.

Murphy’s reluctance to meet face-to-face with dissenting constituents is now turning into reluctance to even talk to them on the phone. It seems he has been given his marching orders to vote for the health care bill regardless of it being deficit neutral and regardless of what his constituents want. Why waste time talking to the people you represent when you can be rubbing elbows with celebrities?

Good move Congressman Murphy. You may find it difficult, however, to take your slam-dunk from the basketball court to the voting booth since those celebrities have no vote in the matter. You can take their money, but it’s our votes that you need. Add that to your game.

Yet Another Tele-Town Hall for Congressman Patrick Murphy–Not!

October 22, 2009

Congressman Patrick Murphy, (D, 8th, PA) was scheduled to hold his third tele-town-hall meeting last night, during which he  would “answer” questions pre-selected by the Bucks County Courier Times.  ”Answer” is in quotes because he talks around a question more than actually “answering” it.  As it turns out, it didn’t happen!  It was CANCELLED!

I thought I’d missed it, but it turns out that the Courier Times cancelled the town hall.  That’s according to Murphy’s website.

You can sign up for Murphy’s next tele-town hall on his website, whenever that might occur.  Perhaps then we’ll get answers to the following:

Is Murphy still claiming the currently proposed health care bill is a “1000 page tweak” (or make that a “1500 page tweak” with the latest version)?

Is the new bill deficit neutral as Murphy claims it must be for him to vote for it–should be interesting to see how he finagles his way out of that–oh yeah, it’s Senate Bill 1776–see the story here.)

Is Murphy still touting a pathetic excuse for tort reform (which would reform nothing)?

It’s doubtful Murphy will give answers to any of these questions.  At least not answers that satisfy those who follow the issues.  (That’s the advantage of tele-town halls.  The public doesn’t have the chance to ask the hard questions, and to demand answers that are more than talking points.)

Unfortunately, there’s still no bill to look at and Congress is doing everything in it’s power to keep it hidden and make it confusing.  They’re lying about what’s included and how much it costs.  They aren’t abiding by the President’s promise of transparency ( the President’s directive can be seen here –the disclaimer at the end is certainly needed.)

And they’ve broken Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s promise that  ”the Democrats intend to lead the most honest, most open and most ethical Congress in history.”
http://tinyurl.com/ygsoy3f

Apparently what she and Murphy think is “honest, open, and ethical” and what I think is “honest, open, and ethical” are two very different things.

I guess when Murphy talks around the truth, he’s just following in his party’s leaders’ footsteps.  That is, if he talks to us peons at all.
