Bill Maher Says All is Fair in Comedy

According to Bill Maher, being a comedian gives one the license to do or say almost anything in pursuit of laughs. Also according to Maher, his despicable name-calling and personal attacks (mostly on conservatives and far too often on Sarah Palin) are justified by his quest for the holy grail of laughter and – here’s the really funny part – are never meant to offend anyone.

When asked by MSNBC’s Chuck Todd if he had any regrets about calling Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann the “c”-word (street word for part of the female anatomy), Maher fumbled his way out of making any sort of apology and finally settled on the ridiculous rationalization that comedy made him do it. That’s also when he offered his stunning assertion that he never tries to offend anyone.

Maher has been getting more and more offensive and unreasonable since he self-righteously decided that his progressive ideology rather than his comedy needed to be force-fed to everyone dumb enough to have a different opinion – and that group increases with each show. He goes out of his way to offend because he knows it brings ratings more than laughter does which, sometimes, is even weak and embarrassed from his liberal-stacked audience.

Maher is showing signs of believing his own hype as many celebrities do. He seems to think of himself as a legitimate political expert, yet, he continues to make asinine statements (easily debunked) that prove how far from reality that is. If he weren’t so dangerous, he would just be pitiful. However, far too many people treat his show as a serious “news” show and take his ramblings as a legitimate political point of view.

It will be interesting to see how long HBO will continue to put up with the ugly press coming Maher’s way. It will also be a good indication of how willing HBO is to put ideology above program content. Unfortunatley, that leads one to believe that Maher will remain for quite some time.

Who is Bill Maher??? Sounds like someone who is a gutter snipe and speaks little of those who look to him as an entertainer. If he thinks of himself as a comic, he should research the work of true comics: Red Skelton, Bob Hope, Johnny Carson, Bill Cosby, Jerry Seinfeld; performers who left people with belly laughs and wanting more. Like I said, ‘who is Bill Maher’?
