The Demise of Greatness

September 26, 2015

Is it really surprising that a recent poll showed 72% of Americans believe this country is not as great as it once was? Greatness requires great leaders and our political atmosphere is not attracting our best.

Our brightest and most competent leaders are far too wise to subject themselves and their families to the mud slinging, dirty tricks, and media bashing that has taken over politics. Furthermore, experience and competence mean little to one-issue voters far more concerned with social issues than the country’s wellbeing.

The election of Obama, an inexperienced community organizer, for the sake of “making history” is a result, not the cause, of our declining greatness, but it has accelerated the decline. Obama caters to a society shunning the common good in favor of the individual; a society obsessed with the emotional satisfaction of legislating fairness for all, an unrealistic goal. His election legitimized political correctness, encouraging a denial of reality.

The Obama administration’s ineffective and unrealistic foreign policies produced a vacuum of leadership in the world and a loss of international respect. The White House, once a symbol of our greatness, has become a bully pulpit of pettiness and self-aggrandizement where sniping at critics and casting blame is commonplace. Social engineering is a priority and instead of sound economic policies, our floundering economy is being dealt with by rhetoric filled with a pretense of achievement. Nothing is real; nothing is true.

The building block of our nation, the family unit, is fractured and an agenda under the guise of “progress” is eradicating morality and common decency. Under this agenda, anything goes – but everything is going away. The mainstream media actively promotes this agenda, swaying public opinion toward accepting it by deceivingly “reporting” on its goodness.

If the 72% who see greatness dissolving vote wisely, this can change. Otherwise, this country’s greatness will exist only in history books – if “progress” allows history to remember it.

Underlying Cause

April 30, 2015

The death of Freddie Grey did not cause looting and burning in Baltimore any more than the death of Michael Brown caused looting and burning in Ferguson. Years of excusing such destructive rage caused it to become an acceptable and commonplace inner-city response to almost any offense.

Consequences for rioting have typically been government rebuilding funds and increases in community assistance – along with much media attention. Thus, rioting has basically been rewarded, not punished, and the free-for-all looting involved has enticed nefarious opportunists to actively inflame situations to create more rioting. It has become an industry.

For years the black community has been taught that they are victims and, as such, bear no personal responsibility. Blame for all ills has been placed on racism, slavery, Republicans, corruption, and white privilege – everything but personal behavior. Progressive liberals, aided by race hustlers, have convinced all too many in the black community that they are entitled victims unable to fend for themselves and it has been insulting and debilitating.

Racism exists (and most probably always will) and there are racist police officers who have committed atrocities, but it is not systematic any more than gunning down white police officers is systematic in the black community. Individuals in police departments and all communities are responsible for their actions and all need to understand this and be held accountable. Across-the-board indictments are inflammatory, non-productive, and ignorant.

Martin Luther King proved that peaceful protests work and he made enormous strides doing so, but that lesson is being turned to ashes in the riotous fires in cities such as Baltimore and Ferguson. Protests bring national attention that can produce positive results. Rioting brings attention but it also brings needless destruction, animosity, and more racial tension.

The focus continues to be on police transgressions, but until the black community seriously addresses lack of personal responsibility, race relations will continue to deteriorate, race hustlers will continue to exploit, liberals will continue to victimize, and inner cities will continue to burn. This is not a political or racial issue; it is a human issue.

Common Sense Takes a Hike in Seattle

June 4, 2014

Washington State has the highest state minimum wage at $9.32 an hour, but the Seattle city council decided that $15 an hour is better. So, the road to hell received a new paving block with the good intention of a more than 50% increase in Seattle’s minimum wage. This feel-good, idealistic ordinance will have unintended consequences and the dominoes will begin falling.

The first domino to fall will wipe out some minimum wage jobs, hurting many who were supposed to be helped by this ordinance. Employers will have to cover the cost of this wage hike by eliminating jobs and increasing the work load for others. They will also think twice before bringing on new hires at any wage level.

Some adult minimum wage workers will be replaced with teens who are allowed by this ordinance to be paid less than $15 an hour. Families desperately dependent on an adult minimum wage earner will suffer and the cost of welfare and unemployment benefits will rise (tax increase on the horizon?). The replacement of adults with teens will also bring a lower level of competence to those jobs, resulting in reduced quality, productivity, and customer satisfaction.

Skilled workers now making $15 an hour will demand a raise – and rightly so. It would be an insult for an experienced, skilled worker to make the same hourly wage as a burger-flipper. Unions will certainly back up this demand and wages across the board will increase accordingly. As wages increase, so will prices – on everything.

Some workers will benefit from this increase, but a rising cost of living and the economic effect of other falling dominoes will make that short-lived. The idea that this will help the overall economy is similar to that of Obamacare lowering insurance premiums: Wishful thinking.

Believing something will happen does not make it so, and short-term “feel good” actions have long-term consequences. Socialist Seattle City Council member Kshama Sawant gleefully tells us: “$15 in Seattle is just the beginning.” Some, however, believe it may be the beginning of the end.

Screamers Are Winning

May 28, 2014

Aided by the media, the progressive left has re-defined comprehensive immigration reform as amnesty, but there is nothing comprehensive about it at all. Illegal immigrants are only one aspect of the immigration issue but have now become the sole purpose behind “reform” for both sides of the aisle.

The GOP originally pushed for real reform which, rationally, called for securing the border before dealing with other immigration issues. This idea was beaten down with the race card as if securing the border was a hateful thing to do. Convinced by the media that this was popular opinion and fearing a loss of votes, the GOP caved and has sheepishly allowed the entire issue to be framed as amnesty.

Obamacare became law in much the same way. It was conceived as a way to provide health insurance to the uninsured, less than 10% of the population, and that remained the driving factor. Details were thrown together hastily in order to get the health care law passed by a Congress favorable to Obama. Now, 90% of the population suffers the consequences of allowing our health care system to be idealistically framed and “reformed”.

Abortion has been framed as “pro-choice”; traditional marriage has been framed as “discriminatory”; religious belief has been framed as “offensive”; opposition to Obama policies has been framed as “racist”; skepticism of man-made global warming has been framed as “denial”; and self-indulgent, morally bankrupt social trends have been framed as “progressive”.

This is the means by which the country is being dismantled brick by brick for “fundamental transformation”. The screamers are re-framing issues to advance their agenda while the silent majority, tired of being called names, being shouted down, and being labeled racists, allow it to happen.

Immigration reform could be the last brick dismantled to achieve total “transformation”. Those given amnesty will show appreciation with votes as will those entering the country through a porous border. American traditions will be trashed, a one-party political system will emerge, wealth will be re-distributed until the economy collapses, and a new third-world country will emerge to replace the leader of the free world – all because the silent majority allowed the screamers to win.

The Tail is Wagging the Dog – Again

May 15, 2014

Once again, graduation commencement speakers are being forced to cancel or are being disinvited due to protests from an offended, vocal minority. For the most part, that minority consists of “progressives” hypocritically displaying their tolerance by being totally intolerant.

Brandeis University’s recent cancelling of Hirsi Ali is an example of how insane this has become. Ali speaks out strongly against the barbaric and totalitarian practices of Islamic law that oppress women throughout the world. However, Brandies University could not overlook “…certain of her past statements that are inconsistent with Brandeis University’s core values”. It seems that Ali’s contention that “there is no moderate Islam” offends progressives much more than the actual wholesale mutilation and killing of innocent women. Too much reality confuses idealistic zealots, so everyone must be denied. This is totalitarian tolerance at its best.

It’s just a matter of time before the college tradition of commencement speakers will be banned. Wimpy school officials fear offending any student who pays a king’s ransom to attend their institution (and pay their salaries), so the easy, coward’s way out is to simply kill the tradition. It’s as easy as pretending there is no legal drinking age on campus and a degree in fine arts is the way to economic security.

Ending commencement speakers will please many progressive whiners because killing traditions is their passion and it doesn’t seem to matter what tradition it is as long as it is killed. The “wagging tail” has taken over our education system, especially higher education, and it demands that “the dog” follow – or else – and “else” is becoming more and more sinister and severe as the majority continues to buckle. You can lose your job, your company, your reputation, your family, or your freedom.

The tail wagging the dog brought abortion on demand, free contraceptives, disintegration of the family unit, freedom from religion, porous borders, amnesty, high unemployment, lower moral standards, a failing education system, a drug-infested society, a weaker military and international disrespect. It’s time to cut the tail off.

The Fallacy of Fairness

February 18, 2014

Like children, progressive liberals often scream “unfair” when something doesn’t go their way. In fact, their entire agenda is built around the unrealistic assumption that life must be “fair” in all things and the government must make it so. This has produced a ‘tail wagging the dog’ situation in society, shredding the idea of a “common good” and producing a culture obsessed with victimhood.

Obamacare shattered our health care system and burdened everyone for the sake of 10% of the population that was uninsured. Our borders continue to be unsafely protected for the sake of amnesty for an estimated 18 million illegal immigrants. The institution of marriage is being re-defined to the detriment of the traditional family unit in order to appease less than 5% of the population. Abortion, utilized by less than 3% of the population, is being subsidized by all through taxes, ignoring all moral or religious objections.

While it is admirable to consider fairness for all, it is unreasonable to always expect it and the pursuit of fairness for “victims” often produces unfairness elsewhere. The current push for a redistribution of wealth only considers those without, ignoring any fairness for those who worked hard to achieve their wealth.

To be truly “fair”, those with wealth who pay most of the nation’s taxes should have their vote count more than those who pay no taxes. They have more skin in the game and should receive more representation because of it, especially since those without will always vote to get “assistance” from tax revenues. There are reasonable arguments for this type of higher representation, but those with wealth are never deemed “victims” and, therefore, do not deserve fairness.

Parents teach children that life is not always fair, but it seems that is too often forgotten by adults. The tail wagging the dog will one day find the dog torn away by so much wagging. What will be considered “fair” when that happens?

Progressive Derangement

November 26, 2013

Professor Noel Ignatiev at Massachusetts College seriously proclaimed to his class: “If you are a white male, you don’t deserve to live. You are a cancer, you’re a disease, white males have never contributed anything positive to the world! They only murder, exploit and oppress non-whites…what can a white male do? He’s good for nothing”.

It has been reported that this tirade basically calling for white males to commit suicide was received by his predominately white, middle-class students with a standing ovation. The “Diversity Chronicle” found it remarkable that “a few far-right extremists” actually objected to the professor’s “sound and reasonable words” that “resonate with every enlightened and progressive mind”. Therefore, an enlightened Ivan Fernando from the “Diversity Chronicle” interviewed Ignatiev to clear up any confusion.

Professor Ignatiev clarified: “The goal of destroying the white race is simply so desirable, it boggles the mind trying to understand how anyone could possibly object to it…Those who object to my advice (destroying the cancer of humanity known as the white race), knowingly or perhaps unknowingly, are themselves white supremacists.”

These are the words of wisdom from a retiring, tenured professor in our “progressive” education system. The fact that this is so blatantly racist that it makes Al Sharpton look moderate doesn’t even scratch the depth of its depravity, and our children are being brainwashed with twisted ideology like this in colleges all across the country. This is being paid for with second mortgages, student loans, and life-long savings.

If this is the future you desire for your children, don’t vote. Stay home and let the deranged, squeaky wheels continue to steer the country. The past two presidential elections emboldened those who espouse this nonsense and it is being labeled “mainstream” thinking. Is it? If so, we are already past the point of no return. If not, we may still be able to avoid doom, but the “mainstream” has to vote to be heard.

Miley Cyrus on a Downward Spiral

August 26, 2013

Miley Cyrus, three months short of the age of 21, continued her attempt to shed her teeny-bopper image at the MTV Video Music Awards Show by emulating the sexually explicit performances of those she admires. In the process, she made a fool of herself, proving she is far from the mature, adult performer she longs to be.

The fact that she believes she needs to be sexually over-the-top in her performance in order to advance her career is a clear indication of how sick the pop culture is – and how sick Miley may be because of it. It is also a warning to parents about the influence pop culture has on children and how easily it can erase the values parents work to instill.

Miley’s performance was an obvious attempt to shock the audience as Madonna and Lady Gaga have done in the past. Sadly equating shock with entertainment, Miley may have taken a step backwards, alienating more long-time fans than enticing new ones. Embracing overt sexual display as proof of maturity indicates adolescent confusion and, possibly, a need for professional help. If she was advised to take this route, she may also need new management.

Miley is a product of our sick pop culture, and it is sad to watch her deteriorate. Those who do not see this are part of the problem – and far too many fit that bill.

Schumer’s Victory Dance

June 14, 2013

Sen. Chuck Schumer gleefully said on the Senate floor that “illegal immigration will be a thing of the past” once his immigration bill is passed. Where, exactly, is the pride in solving an illegal act by making it legal? Is that the best we can do? Apparently, it is, and it is one more sign of our escalating decline.

There is little doubt that if Schumer’s “solution” is put into place, border crossings will increase by those seeking the amnesty Schumer is eager to offer. Crossings are already rising in Texas. Schumer’s promise of securing the border later is as meaningful as “you can keep the health insurance you have”. Our government has a long history of reneging on promises and cutting funds.

When society stigmatized divorce, we made divorce easily obtainable. Today, 50% of marriages end in divorce and the family unit is crumbling. When illegal alcohol spurred out-of-control organized crime, we made alcohol legal again and organized crime flooded the country with drugs. We “solved” illegal gambling by making it legal through casinos and membership in Gambling Anonymous is steadily rising. When teen pregnancies increased, we handed out condoms in elementary schools and began actively encouraging their frequent use, resulting in a single motherhood epidemic. We “solved” the problem of dangerous back-alley abortions by making abortion legal, resulting in more and more abortions that have gone so far as murder outside the womb.

There is a pattern here. Society and our “leaders” are solving difficult problems with easy fixes and no forethought to consequences. The current easy fix being generated for our runaway drug problem is to make drugs legal. Does anyone really believe flooding the free market with legal, dangerous drugs (and that will surely be a result) will curtail their usage?

Chuck Schumer’s victory dance is not only premature, it is ridiculous. Amnesty, especially before securing the border, is a politically expedient fix for a difficult problem that will cause more problems. Obamacare is a perfect example of a hasty, politically expedient fix resulting in a nightmare.

When will we ever learn?

Irreversible Damage

May 2, 2013

After the Boston bombings, a poll revealed that Fox News was the most watched and most trusted network covering the incident. Although the rejection of liberal biased networks is encouraging, damage caused by years of voter ignorance aided by media bias may be irreversible.

A recent poll shows that 42% of Americans don’t know that Obamacare has been passed into law. Unfortunately, many of these people vote. The hastily passed healthcare bill that is proving to be a disaster was sold to the public by a media vested in “making history” and reluctant to report on the bill’s failures. Congress is now trying to exempt itself from Obamacare while some unions, avid Obama backers, are trying to get many of its provisions repealed, but the media continues praising it.

Another poll shows that 55% of Americans don’t know that Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in the country, actually performs abortions. It receives taxpayer money based on the perception that its function is only women’s healthcare, a notion reinforced by President Obama stating publicly that Planned Parenthood provides mammograms, which it doesn’t.

The current trial of abortionist doctor Kermit Gosnell, accused of killing newborns as part of his abortion practice, went unmentioned by the mainstream media until it was forced to cover it because of the attention from Fox News and other responsible news outlets. The progressive media fully approves of abortion so it is reluctant to report anything negative concerning it.

Due to media-assisted voter ignorance, many abortion practices that most find despicable have taken root in society and flaws in Obamacare adversely affecting everyone have become law. It now seems likely that immigration reform will focus on amnesty and ignore border security, putting us all in danger for years to come.

Permanent damage has been done and more is sure to come if the biased media continues unfettered. A Republican White House would surely compel the liberal media to return to being a “watchdog” critically investigating administration policies. If that doesn’t occur, the damage already done will end up seeming miniscule compared to what is coming.
