‘Free’ Bernie Sanders

February 2, 2016

It is not surprising that aging Hillary Clinton is having trouble getting the youth vote but young Democrat voters overwhelmingly supporting the even more aging Bernie Sanders has surprised many. However, when you consider what Bernie stands for, the reasons become obvious.

Bernie Sanders is strongly pushing for a “free” college education. That is, of course, attractive to anyone facing the rising cost of a college education and the ensuing burden of a student loan. It certainly speaks to today’s youth who have been thoroughly indoctrinated by a liberal education system advocating the socialistic ideal of cradle-to-grave government care. How we are to pay for that “free” education is not clear but it is also not relevant to those wanting and expecting freebies.

Sanders calls himself a “democratic socialist” but that distinction is not understood by most and it is certainly lost on today’s youth. The failure of our education system is responsible for the lack of knowledge concerning socialism’s failure throughout history and, consequently, today’s youth are gravitating towards socialism’s vacuous promise of a utopian society. The “Occupy” movement and unrealistic demands heard on college campuses are a product of this ignorance of socialism.

Sanders takes advantage of this ignorance with his socialistic promises of a “free” college education, guaranteed health care, and $15 an hour minimum wage – in other words, freebies. He demonizes corporations and the rich and rails against income inequality, an easy sell to young workers starting at low salaries. His 90% tax rate for the rich sounds fine to those far from the top but it is not enough and the middle class will have to reach further into their pockets to help pay for all the “free” stuff.

At the age of 74, Bernie Sanders is not considered too old for Democrats who expressed concern about John McCain’s age (71) in 2008 and Ronald Reagan’s age (69) in 1980. JFK was 43–yrs-old when he took office and Obama, 47-years-old in 2008, was touted as a youthful and energetic change much needed for the country. Meanwhile, Democrats accuse Marco Rubio (44) and Ted Cruz (45) of being much too young to be president.

What is most certainly getting old is the hypocrisy – along with Sanders (74) and Hillary (68).

Democrat Debate, Enter Stage Left

October 15, 2015

“Do black lives matter or do all lives matter?” What the hell kind of debate question was that? Requiring an either/or answer is flat out ignorant and foolishly irresponsible. It panders to a political movement that is fomenting racial unrest and tacitly (sometimes explicitly) encouraging anarchy and the killing of police. Lives have been lost because of this movement but, apparently, those lives aren’t supposed to matter.

Jim Webb was the only candidate who courageously broke from the pack by responding: “As a President of the United States, every life in this country matters”. In fact, Webb was the only candidate not attempting to be as far left as possible. He came across as “old school” in that he seemed to have integrity, class, and reasonable responses – all sorely missing in the other candidates. He was surprisingly impressive but certainly not to the far left, so he will be raked over the coals by the media and ousted quickly. He would fit more comfortably with the GOP. The Democratic Party has no place for him.

Sanders was Sanders, a self-proclaimed socialist and as such, a favorite of the far left. He told us that climate change was our greatest national security threat, a view also held by our socialist-leaning president. Social issues, of course, dominated the debate, as they are the focus of the Democratic Party and the current administration. More “free” stuff from the government was offered to entice voters. Foreign affairs and policies, Democrat’s largest failures, received little attention.

Hillary dominated the debate as expected, having little competition from the candidates on the stage. She was not seriously questioned about the scandals dragging her polling numbers down. Her e-mail fiasco was sneeringly dismissed, allowing her to treat the debate as a personal campaign rally, eliciting applause from an adoring crowd.

This debate did little more than show how far left the Democrat Party has traveled. The middle ground has been deserted in search of far left votes. So, too, has the good of the country been deserted.

The Press is NOT Charlie Hebdo

January 19, 2015

A great response to the hypocritical press concerning solidarity with Charlie Hebdo came from Rex Murphy last week at the National Post. He’s not buying their after-the-fact commitment and everyone needs to hear what he has to say about it.

From Rex Murphy

…we are in the middle of another blizzard of post-facto hashtag bravery…The solidarity would have been a lot more impressive, more persuasive, some time before this week’s mass butchery…Indeed, at our universities, newspapers and broadcasters, we have seen an ever-shrinking defense of free speech…the press and the universities, have been at best complicit and at worst cowardly when it comes up to defending freedom of speech — not from threats of Islamist fanatics with guns, but in much less demanding circumstances…

Where was this “we” when a video critical of Islam was mendaciously identified as the “cause” of the terror attack on Benghazi… Where is this We of the Hashtags when whole swathes of the press, and some political leaders, refuse to call acts that are plainly terroristic by their proper name…And where was We of the Hashtags when President Obama made the inexplicable declaration at the United Nations that “the future does not belong to those who slander the Prophet”…There is no “We are Charlie Hebdo” in that statement. There is surrender instead…Our universities bleat about inquiry and free speech, but they are feeble and craven, caving in to protestors and special interests…Where was “we” when a band of fatuous progressives protested former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice giving a convocation address at Rutgers University…Where was We of the Hashtags when Ann Coulter was pre-emptively cautioned about what she could or should say by officials at the University of Ottawa? Where was “we” when Ayaan Hirsi Ali was humiliated and an honourary degree invitation revoked after campus activists at Brandeis University — faculty and students — protested…There is no “we” after the killings. There are very few worthy of that claim … and, alas, under the shout of allahu akbar, 12 of them are now quite dead.

“Free” Community College

January 16, 2015

The very basis for Obama’s “free” community college (as if anything from the government is “free”) is that college has become necessary for all, but that has gone unchallenged for far too long. Ann Coulter not only challenges that idea, she takes a look at the leftist politics involved. As usual, she nails it.

From Ann Coulter

Community college is already incredibly inexpensive. The only thing that will jack up the price is making it “free.”… The cost of a college education has increased by more than 1,000 percent only since 1978…People coming out of college in the ’50s knew more than any recent Yale graduate…They’re teaching gender studies, ethnic studies, moral equivalence and hatred of America…The fact that 80 percent of Weathermen – the violent ’60s radicals – are full college professors tells you all you need to know about the state of higher education today.

The cost of college spirals continuously upward…because college loans are backed by the taxpayer…(m)ore than half of recent college graduates are unemployed or underemployed, meaning they make substandard wages in jobs that don’t require a college degree…Democrats are colluding with colleges to create a market bubble for an increasingly worthless product…Why is the left not willing to admit that education is an industry, just like Lockheed Martin, Enron or Philip Morris?… liberals won’t make a peep about the College Industrial Complex because college professors are brainwashing students into leftist politics…Every year, another 10 million graduates emerge, hating God, their parents, America and Republicans…The education industry is how leftists make capitalists pay for socialism.

Common Sense Takes a Hike in Seattle

June 4, 2014

Washington State has the highest state minimum wage at $9.32 an hour, but the Seattle city council decided that $15 an hour is better. So, the road to hell received a new paving block with the good intention of a more than 50% increase in Seattle’s minimum wage. This feel-good, idealistic ordinance will have unintended consequences and the dominoes will begin falling.

The first domino to fall will wipe out some minimum wage jobs, hurting many who were supposed to be helped by this ordinance. Employers will have to cover the cost of this wage hike by eliminating jobs and increasing the work load for others. They will also think twice before bringing on new hires at any wage level.

Some adult minimum wage workers will be replaced with teens who are allowed by this ordinance to be paid less than $15 an hour. Families desperately dependent on an adult minimum wage earner will suffer and the cost of welfare and unemployment benefits will rise (tax increase on the horizon?). The replacement of adults with teens will also bring a lower level of competence to those jobs, resulting in reduced quality, productivity, and customer satisfaction.

Skilled workers now making $15 an hour will demand a raise – and rightly so. It would be an insult for an experienced, skilled worker to make the same hourly wage as a burger-flipper. Unions will certainly back up this demand and wages across the board will increase accordingly. As wages increase, so will prices – on everything.

Some workers will benefit from this increase, but a rising cost of living and the economic effect of other falling dominoes will make that short-lived. The idea that this will help the overall economy is similar to that of Obamacare lowering insurance premiums: Wishful thinking.

Believing something will happen does not make it so, and short-term “feel good” actions have long-term consequences. Socialist Seattle City Council member Kshama Sawant gleefully tells us: “$15 in Seattle is just the beginning.” Some, however, believe it may be the beginning of the end.

Shocked Voters Deserve This Mess

October 31, 2013

Obamacare is falling apart badly enough to even have Chris Matthews, Obama’s biggest sycophant, question the president’s credibility on it. Hill Democrats are frustrated and publically acknowledging obvious problems for the first time. Self-righteous celebrities are now avoiding interviews about the health care law they were once blindly promoting for Obama.

It is now becoming clear that Obama knew long before now that his continued promise (lie?) of being able to keep existing health plans was not accurate. There should also be little doubt that he knew plan costs were not going to reduce across the board because that never made sense.

This fiasco should not be a surprise to anyone. It was accurately predicted by evil, heartless, racist, women-hating, war mongering Republicans who were, we were told, only against the health care law because they hate Obama and poor people. Warnings were given daily, heard only by those watching FOX News because the mainstream media didn’t want you to know.

Ignorant voters deserve this mess. Voting to make history rather than to make sense was stupid, and there is always a price to pay for stupidity. Apathy, too, comes at a price, so non-voters are just as deserving. We now have a healthcare system in turmoil, costing more, providing less, and promising even more problems and costs in the future.

Ignorance is often accompanied by arrogance, and the emotional investment many have in Obama produces both. A perfect example is MSNBC’s Ed Shultz who immediately went into denial proclaiming “there are no glitches” with the Obamacare rollout and blamed FOX News and Republicans for manufacturing glitches.

Others, such as Bill Maher and Howard Dean, have joined Health Secretary Kathleen Sebelius in a surreal attempt to lay blame on Republicans who, en masse, voted against Obamacare. Denial is ramping up and reality is being distorted to fit the “dream”. With the farce of “comprehensive” immigration reform (aka amnesty) up next for ramming down our throats, reality is the administration’s worst enemy and must be avoided.

Unfortunately, wise and informed voters (a voter minority) will suffer, too, but with no shock. Their shock came when an inexperienced, far left freshman Senator with a background only in community organizing was voted in as president – twice.

Politically Correct Halloween

October 24, 2013

Christmas, Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day, and most traditional holidays, have been targets of the “progressive” PC police in recent times, so it is not surprising to find Halloween under attack. It seems that those who self-righteously consider themselves champions of personal freedom are, once again, shamelessly trying to dictate everyone’s way of life and “transform” America.

The PC Command Center is our nation’s schools and it is there attacks begin. The Cumberland County, PA school district no longer allows costumes or parades for Halloween, citing “safety concerns” as reason for the ban. They do, however, allow dress-up days throughout the year for students to express individual creativity. That would probably include the PC-approved cross-dressing day held at a Milwaukee elementary school.

Inglewood Elementary School in the North Penn School District tried to ban Halloween using the popular and misinterpreted “Separation of Church and State” excuse. As extra ammunition, dietary concerns, specifically peanut allergies, were included. After an angry outcry from those whose sensitivities were supposed to have been rankled, the ban was lifted.

Colleges, however, have very little backlash when they “mold” the minds of students. Banning Halloween can be done in such a way that students do not even realize banning is taking place. The University of Colorado warns students to avoid costumes such as cowboys, Indians, white trash (which I’m sure includes hobos), over-sexualized themes (geishas, French maids), and anything portraying a culture (Pirates, gypsies, Mexican bandits?). The University of Minnesota allows cowboy costumes but not Indian ones or any that perpetuate racial, cultural, and gender stereotypes.

So, traditional baseball and football costumes are out because of the offensive Washington Redskins, Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians, and Kansas City Chiefs. Robots are offensive because they replace human workers. President Obama masks are racist and President Bush masks are…well, Bush is just plain evil. Darth Vader is synonymous with Dick Cheney and a witch is synonymous with Sarah Palin and, of course, any priest or nun costume is highly offensive to progressives.

Halloween is becoming as hollow as the PC movement and progressive ideology, but nowhere near as frightening.

Progressive Immigration Failure in Sweden

May 27, 2013

Progressives love to point to Sweden as an example of the type of utopian society they believe their agenda creates, but this past week’s riots in Sweden are a direct result of the continuing denial such an agenda demands. In the face of these riots, that denial continues as the press tries hard not to report that the overwhelming majority of rioters are Muslims.

Starting in the 80’s, Sweden began admitting a large number of third world immigrants, creating a generous welfare system to help them settle and assimilate. Economic and political upheaval in countries such as Somalia, Eritrea, Afghanistan and Iraq brought a huge number of Muslims to welcoming Sweden. Rather than assimilate, however, they created their own communities mirroring the values and traditions of their Muslim homelands.

The progressive, non-judgmental attitude prevalent in Sweden not only allowed these communities to shun assimilation, it allowed, and encouraged, an entire generation of Muslim immigrants to grow dependent on the welfare system while being infused with values and traditions that clash with Western societies. The violence towards the West found in the Middle East Muslim world, therefore, became part of their upbringing.

As Sweden tries to address the economic burden of their welfare system and revamp immigration policies, accusations of discrimination abound from those who have benefited most from those progressive policies. The autonomous communities that have been allowed to form are becoming offensive to many and as refusal to change continues, discrimination will undoubtedly occur.

There is much confusion on the part of officials in Sweden concerning the riots. Fully engrossed in progressive idealism, they do not understand how the recipients of their generosity could do such a thing. For those without progressive blinders, it is an inevitable result of being conditioned to welfare and treated with non-judgmental deference.

There is a lesson to be learned from this, but it is highly doubtful progressives here will see it. They have the same idealistic blinders on, believing open immigration and unlimited welfare works. The mainstream media agrees and will continue to conceal the rot such policies bring. They are much too invested to turn back now and will not allow riots in Sweden to be an omen.

Putting the Cat Back in the Bag

April 10, 2013

Once the proverbial cat is out of the bag, it is next to impossible to get it back in. So it has been with laws. Once on the books, it has been very, very hard to get a law repealed unless, that is, repeal dovetails with the progressive agenda.

Colorado is set to erase the crime of adultery from its books in order to “keep the government out of people’s bedrooms” and because the law is “archaic”. It seems we are to ignore that the government has already been in our bedrooms forcing health insurers to pay for abortions and provide free contraception. As long as the government is watering-down morality, bedroom intrusion is acceptable.

The traditional family unit is no longer considered as important as self-gratification. Adultery, divorce, abortion, out-of-wedlock pregnancy, and open marriage have not only become acceptable, they are often being advocated. An entire generation has been raised with a low regard for the family unit and are left with no cornerstone for building the future.

Obamacare was passed hastily in order to satisfy Obama’s personal desire for universal health care. He did not read or understand the bill beforehand and didn’t care how damaging it could be as long as it was passed. Unfortunately, it will now be very difficult to get any of it changed or repealed. The common good was neglected in order to benefit 10% of the population – and there is no going back.

Gun control and immigration reform are the current cats being let out of the bag. Both require a serious and impartial analysis of consequences, but both will be handled by knee-jerk, emotional legislation instead. Years from now, there will be a lot of consternation as legislators try to repeal thE soon-to-be hastily passed laws. They will chase those cats for a long time but they will never get them back in the bag.

Reagan Was Right – Again

March 25, 2013

As a result of North Korea rattling its nuclear sword with long range missile tests and development of a mobile launcher, Obama reluctantly reversed his decision to freeze the Alaskan missile defense system and allowed ground-based missile interceptors to be deployed. By doing so, Obama inadvertently pays homage to Ronald Reagan’s SDI initiative.

Thirty years ago, Reagan was demonized and ridiculed for his “evil empire” speech against the Soviet Union and his idea of a missile defense initiative (SDI). It was sneeringly labeled “Star Wars” by Sen. Ted Kennedy who had no such ridicule when President John F. Kennedy pushed the limits of technology by calling for a man on the moon in less than a decade. Technology is only embraced by liberals when it fits their political ideology.

Both George H. and George W. Bush kept SDI alive while in the White House. Bill Clinton, supposedly a far-thinking president, pointedly ignored it as best he could. Obama is only allowing interceptors because North Korean missiles may now have the capability of hitting the west coast of the US. His foreign policy with North Korea and Iran failed to stop or limit their nuclear aggression and threats can no longer be ignored.

Obama’s distaste for SDI was evident when he cancelled the anti-missile system that was scheduled for deployment in Poland and the Czech Republic as a defense against potential Iranian missiles. Obama caved to the Russian complaint (fear?) against a system that could neutralize Russian intercontinental missiles, as if defending against them was an act of aggression. Consequently, Iran’s continued development of a nuclear missile poses a threat that could have been, but won’t be, defended against.

Obama cancelled several other missile defense programs, causing us to fall behind in that technology at a time when the threat of a rogue nuclear missile is increasing. Once again, Obama’s “fundamental transformation” is proving to be out of touch with reality and dangerous to the welfare of the country. If he finishes stripping us down to the defense level of other European countries, where will we and the free world turn for protection? Reagan instinctively understood.
